Fiji
A Polynesian pearl in the Pacific Ocean, Fiji is a popular
tourist paradise in spite of its remote location and frequent coups.
Good tropical weather, laid-back atmosphere, excellent diving and
great beaches make it a popular stopover route between North America
and Australia/New Zealand.
Modern Fiji embodies Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian,
Chinese and European influences and indigenous Fijian culture has
managed to survive in many unique ways.
Suva is Fiji?s only real urban cluster, with useful facilities
but unappealing to the traveller. It does have character however,
with a developed waterfront area, good municipal market and
fascinating museum.
Most tourist head for Nadi on the west coast. It is distinctly
Hindu (check out the colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple),
and set to a mountainous backdrop. It doesn?t compete with the
outlying islands for peace and beauty but serves as a good launching
point, and has several good hotels and nice beaches. Heading into
the interior, you?ll discover the remote villages and incredible
landscape of the Nausori Highlands, especially at Navala and Bukuya.
Sigatoka, on the southern coast, serves the farming community and
lovely Sigatoka Valley which contains more than 200 intriguing
archaeological sites. It offers respite from the tourists crowds and
is quaint.
